Maithon, derived its name from “Mai Ka Sthan”, meaning the place for the Hindu Goddess Maa Kalyaneshwari. It is located on the banks of river Barakar. The Maithon Dam is located about 48 kms from the Coal City of Dhanbad. The dam with an underground power station is one of its kinds in the whole of South East Asia. The lake on which it is built is spread over 65 square kilometers. This was developed by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC Ltd) way back in the year 1948. The dam is about 15712 ft long and about 165 ft long. The underground power station has a capacity to generate around 60,000 KW of electric power.
Topchanchi Lake is an interesting tourist spot in the Dhanbad district of Jharkhand. Situated on the National Highway 2, it is located at the Golden Quadrilateral. Dhanbad Railway Station is 37 km from the lake and Bokaro is 41 km. Though the lake is an artificial one, its green surrounding amidst forests and hills makes it an ideal picnic spot. It is also in demand for sound and serene vacations. It covers a total area of 214 acres. Parasnath Hills being located close by makes the tourists visit the lake at the same time. Topchanchi Lake is basically a stream which is dammed like a reservoir to supply water to the district and its suburban areas. Topchanchi Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over 8.75 sq km. The area is small enough yet few harmless animals reside here. The area surrounding the lake is also seeked by religious people, specially Jains and Hindus.
Panchet dam is built across the Damodar River in Dhanbad District’s Panchet area in Jharkhand. Inaugurated in 1959, Panchet dam is the fourth of the 4 multi-purpose dams that fall under the first phase of Damodar Valley Corporation.
Panchet Dam is located at a distance of 9 km from Chirkunda on the G.T. Road, at a distance of 54 km from Dhanbad, 20 km from Asansol and 240 km from Kolkata. In the north of the Panchet dam, the district of Dhanbad is located and in the southern bank it is flanked by the district of Purulia.
Birsa Munda Park is the only park in Dhanbad and it is counted among the attractive placesnearby which attracts people from all age groups. It has walkway, leisure area, play area, toy train, various rides for children, canteen and plants of different species spread over 21 acres of land. It was opened in the month of November 2009. The Development of Birsa Munda Park was a resultant of various schemes namely MGNREGA, RSVY, Tourism Department, SGSY, etc. It has not only provided growth to the place but it has also created employment for the people along with recreational facilities.
